Beaconsfield High School

On Sunday we celebrated 60 years of Becky High with 120 alumnae and former staff, and what a day we had! The day began with tours of the school led by our current Year 10, 11 and 12s followed by a prosecco drinks reception in the SFSA. Lunch was served by our students at 1pm in the main hall to the sounds of the string ensemble and one of our choirs. Amanda ('66) and Hilary ('88) spoke about their time at Becky High, former staff shared their memories via a pre-recorded film and Ms Bond and Millie (former Head Girl) spoke about life as it is today! And of course, a birthday lunch would not be complete without a birthday cake and a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday! Guests were asked to write a 60th birthday card to the school which we will display to current staff and students. Commemorative tote bags and hanging ornaments were taken away as a reminder of both the last 60 years and a lovely trip down memory lane! Dr Ricci and Mrs Morrison regularly hold lunchtime sessions which offer students the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiential learning: yesterday they experienced what it would be like to take part in a Seder meal as part of the Jewish festival of Pesach. They were able to link what they learned in class in terms of religious symbolism and practice with real-life objects (e.g., Seder plate) and foods (e.g., matzah, maror, charoset). Ultimately, this makes sure that the students' experiences and mindsets are broadened by literally tasting what other cultures/religious traditions offer!

17 of our Year 12 students have completed a one-term introductory course in quantum computing! We are one of the very first schools in the UK to offer a programme of this kind. As with AI, quantum computing is one of the defining technologies of the 21st century, and the course introduced students to core ideas such as qubits, superposition, and quantum entanglement, as well as giving them experience of programming quantum algorithms. #physics #beaconsfield #grammar #STEAM

It's BHS World Book Week 9-13 March and this year we are supporting the charity @bookmarkreading. On Thursday 12 March students are encouraged to come into school dressed as their fav literary character in exchange for a £2+ donation (made via ScoPay), the proceeds of which will go to this charity. On Wednesday Year 10 and 12 (plus some Year 11 and Year 13) drama students attended the Oxford Playhouse Theatre to watch a performance of The Woman in Black in preparation for their Drama written examinations. The students were in the stalls... and not only that......in the second, third and fourth rows! This definitely proved to be a more intense experience than sitting anywhere else in the theatre, especially when the Woman in Black herself walked past Mrs Craggs and Mrs Flanagan! A fantastic experience which gives the students a wealth to analyse and evaluate in their written paper. Mrs Grantham was thrilled to see the impact the tension and suspense created in the theatre had on our BHS students, an exemplary example of how effective theatre can be achieved with simple set, props, clever design and two actors. We don't count the ghost of the Woman in Black as an 'actor' as she is the only role in all of theatre history that doesn't get a programme credit - as she's real... isn't she....?

The Becky High Futures Fair landed again! Our Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to find out about careers in healthcare, finance, law, TV production, professional sports, archiving, science, technology, uniformed services and many more. With universities and colleges from across the country providing advice on courses, there was something for everyone. Grateful thanks to all our exhibitors for inspiring and informing our students and to Mrs Wray and her team for their hardworking in putting this together!
